Momma I’m comin home…

We are coming back home for the weekend because my Nana isn’t feeling well. We want to see our families, engorge ourselves with good Chinese and Pizza and possibly go here:

Our jobs are being so super cool about it and we are so grateful for that. Also it’s another example of all the synchronicity that’s been happening in our lives lately. If I hadn’t gotten this job right when I did, there’s no way we could have come home to see Nana right now. And how lucky that I got a job that values family over business. I worked at a job just a few years ago where my boss gave me a hard time over these following things:

1) She wouldn’t allow me to go to my Aunt’s funeral.
2) She was mad because I took time off to sit with my Dad in the hospital.
3) At another job, I had gotten a call that my Mom had had a heart attack (she didn’t) but was in the Emergency Room. I ran out to take the call and this guy CHASED ME OUT of the building and demanded to know what I was doing WHILE I was on the phone with my panicked family. I told him what was happening and he said he didn’t care, to get in and answer the goddamn phone and not to leave my desk again without asking him first. Yeah I quit that bitch haha.

Anyway, all of my bosses and all of Krissy’s allowed us to take the time no questions asked and I am SO grateful and thankful for that.

So we’re still in the planning stages of this because we just finalized the tickets yesterday. If you are one of our family members, please don’t stress out if you can’t make it to see us or anything. We couldn’t have planned this any differently so this trip is less about seeing everyone that we can and more about spending quality unrushed time with just a few loved ones.

We had toyed with having dinner in NY but when we woke up this morning, we realized it would be a waste of time. NY is (probably) not going anywhere and we couldn’t think of anything to do there that we haven’t done a zillion times before or would really want to do again. I mean there are a lot of NY performers we’d like to see and we looked into it but they all happen to be somewhere else right now, some of them actually in LA haha.

So that’s that. I’m still gonna post pictures every day. If I thought I was tired from the late night at GLAAD Awards, how am I gonna be next week? We are landing at LAX at almost 10pm after a six hour flight and then I have work in the morning! OMG.

And for any robbers out there:

Don’t even try it, we have people watching. Yeah that’s right.

Day One Hundred and Two

I can’t even get into how awesome the GLAAD Media Awards were right now because I don’t have the time but we had so much fun. We laughed, we cried, we accidentally rubbed elbows with Mondo from Project Runway. We didn’t have cable during that season so therefore had no idea who he was. Nice guy though!

Anyway, all I will say for right now is:

Dolly Parton
Amy Poehler
Rashida Jones
Craig Robinson
Sean Hayes
People from the cast of Modern Family
People from the cast of Parks and Recreation
Kristin Chenowith
Joel McHale
Marlee Matlin
Meatloaf!

The list goes on, I mean there were just so many people there that I am such a big fan of. Also, we escorted the girls from “Pretty Little Liars”. They were really nice.

Kristin Chenowith received an award and her speech made us cry. Kristyn found it on YouTube and cried all over again. I’ll find it and post it later. She’s so damn amazing.

Anyway, I said I wouldn’t go into it and here I am anyway: Going into it. I’ll stop, I have work to do. Later.

I am STILL dizzy from the champagne I guzzled. I have seriously learned that:

Coleen + Alcohol = Broken Toy

I guess I’m lucky that I don’t have a hangover cuz I really don’t. I don’t feel sick or headachey, just fuzzy and sort of euphoric. Definitely NOT the way I want to feel at work. Drink some more Joe Coleen. You can do this!

The Jerri Blank Chronicles

Guys, I realized today that when I start school in the fall, I will turn into Jerri Blank.  Before I get into that, let me tell you what my plans are.

An interesting thought

I want to start by saying that I am sorry if these every day posts with our faces and the mundane elements of our day to day are seriously boring haha.  Well I am and I’m not.  My original intent was just to take a picture of my face and this was because:

1) I think it would be interesting to see how and if my face changes over a year.

2) I’m not comfortable in front of a camera so it’s kind of nice to let go of that insecurity.  Maybe next year I’ll do full-length body shots.  I need to be comfortable that way too.  Baby steps.

I added in the “what we did today” stuff because:

1) It was just a natural step.  Why not?

2) I think it would be funny to see exactly what we DID all year.  Like were we lazy?  Were we busy?  Was this a good year or a bad one?  I think we tend to paint a year with a broad brush “good” or “bad”.  I’m pretty sure this is going to be a tough year so I’ll be tempted to paint it with a “bad”.  But if I look back on the days I’ve had so far, they’ve all been “good” or “nice” with only like one or two “bad”.

The interesting thought I had was this:

Me and Kristyn were talking last night about how it’s funny that you forget so much stuff in your life.  The only memories you ever really hold onto are kind of stored in your brain as a picture and then the events are kind of words around that picture.  Okay well let me back up.  Kristyn was reading an article about Susan Sontag and in it, Susan was talking about the power of photography. She was specifically talking about war photography. How powerful of a medium it is. Like when wars are going on, on other people’s soil, if there isn’t a picture of it, we can’t feel it or imagine it. And how even one picture of one moment in time can encapsulate a moment and so perfectly sum the moment up AND give you an understanding of what happened.

So then we started talking about how your life is reduced to a series of small pictures in your head of events that took place. Conversely, we tend to hand onto the memories that we actually HAVE physical pictures of. Because the camera is doing the work that our memory does. Like if our brains are a filing cabinet for memories stored as images with words attached, photographs are like forcing your brain to recall a memory. Even if you forget that moment because it didn’t make that big of an impression, if there is a picture, you will be drawn right back into that moment and (for the most part) remember that day.

So I don’t know that a picture of my face a day will bring back startling vivid memories of me watching Buffy and playing Harry Potter Lego but in a way, I will have at least one year of my life that I know what happened every day. One year with a light shined on it. One year that doesn’t go hazy with memory. That’s kind of a nice thought. That said, I really need to get a job if I want this “memorable year” to be any kind of good memory haha. MOMMA NEEDS MONEY AND TO GET OUT OF THE HOUSE SOME!

Th’sall.

P.S. Speaking of shit that happened, a woman just tried to walk into my house. Our apartment is on ground level and we don’t have a lot of windows so I keep the front door open with just the screen door closed. My front door opens out into our courtyard. SO if you walk into the courtyard, you can see right into my apartment and me sitting here. These two women came into the courtyard, came up to my screen door, talked to my cats and went to open the (locked) screen door to walk right in. I was like, “Can I help you?” She said, “Here’s an invitation to you from the Baptist Church!” I said, “Okay, you can leave it right there” so she stuck it in the door haha. *sigh* We need to move.

I suck/rule at life

Reason why I suck at life:

I just remembered NOW. 39 minutes into it starting. That I was invited to an informational meeting for a school I applied to. Specifically for a program I applied for that I do not know how it works and really could have USED and informational meeting for. Kristyn has to be at work at 11 so I remembered as she was pulling away. I actually RSVP’d that I was coming to this event. I actually marked it on my calendar and day planner. Then as Kristyn was leaving, a nagging feeling hit me like maybe there is something important I am supposed to do today. A quick check of the ol’ day planner lets me know I am a chucklehead. Coleen, you suck at life.

Reason why I rule at life:

This morning I bounded out of bed effortlessly and was in the kitchen making breakfast (bending, reaching, grabbing, doing) for about five minutes before I realized that I EFFORTLESSLY BOUNDED OUT OF BED AND WAS STANDING IN THE KITCHEN MAKING BREAKFAST. I’m healed! Man the past week was full of me slouching around like a 90 year old. There was a gutteral sound I had to make to do anything. Kind of like an “AAAAAAARGH!” Kristyn called it my “lifting weights” sound. Like I already said, my back was hella sore in the morning and today? Just bounded out of bed and made breakfast with ease. I feel like goddamn Cinderella (not the wenchy one, the princesa one). Kristyn gave me a hug and then a high five and said, “Way to heal!” I think that says it. Also, I think, “Coleen you rule at life” also says it.

In case I forget to blog about this stuff…

Here are three pictures from last week that I shot that I really liked for different reasons:

Bijou Phillips & Danny Masterson on the Red Carpet at Cirque Berzerk

Day Eighteen

Okay today was much more of the same. I have a couple of projects that I’m working on currently, one being:

MAID OF HONOR AT MY SISTER’S WEDDING!

SO EXCITING! Oh THAT was the good news I had a week or so ago. No, no job to speak of. Well, no PAYING job to speak of haha. But I’m really excited and have a ton of ideas and I think she’s gonna like’m. Christine, no poking around and NO questions.

Anyway, here I am posing with Monster. This is me without any makeup on. You know, at first, this project was making me really self-conscious. I wasn’t used to taking pictures of myself or seeing myself on a regular basis besides like you know in the mirror. But I know I have my flaws and I know I’m no Patricia Arquette (I KNOW it’s weird!) but I’m not half bad! For a person who tends to self-consciousness in photos, I am actually not reacting badly to seeing myself. I know that part of that is taking a thousand pictures and selecting the one to show you that has the LEAST of my double chin encroaching into the picture but that’s neither here nor there. The only negatives that I’m starting to pick at are my honker of a nose (which I honestly haven’t thought of in years) and my eye wrinkles (which I kinda like). BUT I’d never change those things so there you have them. Coleen has a big nose and wrinkled eyes.  BFD. There are worse problems.

And here is Kristyn in a full state of alertness. She had me take her picture BEFORE work today while she was headed out the door. For some reason she was concerned with how level her nose was with Chucky’s. Hey I don’t ask the questions, I just take the pictures. Just doing what I’m told.

And here is a bonus picture that Kristyn insisted I take of just hers and Chucky’s eyeballs. Naturally their (level) noses got into the picture and she cropped them right the funk out immediately and told me to add this as a bonus picture. She was in rare form this morning (afternoon). Haha.

So that’s me day! I’m going to bed now because I have to actually be up in a few hours to help Kristyn get out the door and I know I won’t go back to sleep after that. G’nite!

P.S. I wrote two blogs for LA Music Blog! Here’s the song that keeps running through my head regarding this endeavor, I shit you not:

Day Sixteen for realsies

Okay, I’m up and alert and have had my first barrel of coffee. This means I am ready to post our 365 Face Project pictures from yesterday! That bathroom picture I posted yesterday was from a club downtown called The Smell. Kristyn went to cover a band called The Babies for LA Music Blog but we got there early and caught all of the bands. It was cool/weird to be there.

For our birthdays, we always go away somewhere. Mine is in Septembeer (typo and it stays) and Kristyn’s is in January. We love vacationing off-season so our birthdays make a great time to go somewhere. AND our birthdays are a few months apart so usually we are SERIOUSLY DUE for a vacation after a few months of diligence.

Anyway, we love this band The Gossip and they used to always play in the fall and in the spring on the East Coast. Usually we’d just go to one show in NYC but in 2006 we decided to get tickets for all of their East Coast shows (besides Massachussetts because we couldn’t fit it in timewise). So we got tickets for Roseland in NYC, some little club in Philadelphia (upon further reflection I think it was in the basement rec room of a church), the Black Cat in DC and Ottobar in Baltimore. (Baltimore is TERRIFYING.) We figured it would be a cool road trip with something we want to see at every stop. Also, we’d been to all of these cities besides Baltimore and knew we wouldn’t feel like we were missing anything if we didn’t go sightseeing. The trip was a ton of fun and the bands were awesome. The Gossip had Mika Miko and Erase Errata open up for them on all of the dates. Both bands are all girls. Mika Miko is punk music. Erase Errata is kind of more psychadelic. ANYWAY. We became fans of both bands. In reading up on Mika Miko, we found out that they are from LA and play primarily at a club called The Smell.

So when Kristyn got offered tickets for a show at The Smell, she jumped on them! We’d been intending to go since we got here but we’ve been so broke that we didn’t even look into it. Turns out the shows are really cheap ($5). The venue is an empty building in an alleyway in downtown and actually only like five minutes from our house. I think it’s basically less a club and more an “artspace”. It was funny though because they had a library of books to read, a small candy/soda/water vendor and artwork all over the walls.

A few months ago we found out that Mika Miko had broken up. We were bummed out about it but walking in, I saw two of the gals. As it turns out, they were both playing but in different bands so that was fun. Kristyn said they help run the place which is cool.

Anyway, the show was fun and I took a million pictures of the bands. I’ll post some pictures after Kristyn writes her review because I don’t want to put the cart before the horse.

I took this picture of myself in the parking lot after the show. I don’t know why I look like a wax dummy/mannequin/doll in my expression but I do. My greasy appearance and crazy hairs are due to how humid it gets inside The Smell. Oh, ALSO, that bathroom that I posted a picture of yesterday? Very clean. Plenty of toilet paper and hand towels, just (obviously) no sink haha.

And here is Kristyn. I took this picture during The Babies. Good times. Oh another weird factoid is that The Babies are from Brooklyn and moved to Echo Park. We are from Northeastern NJ (about a half hour to an hour from Brooklyn depending on traffic) and moved to Silver Lake (the neighborhood next to Echo Park). This may seem like non-news but it’s always nice to meet someone from your area out here. It’s kind of comforting. I wanted to scream “US TOO!” at them and put up my hand for a high five but I controlled myself and am now taking my exuberance out on you. You are SO welcome.

And here are some Mika Miko videos for you to enjoy!

This one is cute.

This one is actually filmed at The Smell at the start of the tour we saw them on.

This video is cool.

And I just like this song.

Day Eleven

I took down the Christmas Tree today. The neighbors must think we’re crazy because we put a bunch of empty boxes in the courtyard last night and now I added a tree to that mess. And our tree came with a disposable stand so it’s just standing there in the middle of everything. I swept up some of the needles but I’m not allowed to use the vacuum so I’ll have to wait for Kristyn to suck them up tomorrow. I’m not allowed to use the vacuum because it ALWAYS stops working when I use it. Electronic stuff always goes bananas around me for some reason. Maybe my brain is too chaotic or something haha. Also I’m going to wait until Kristyn gets home to put the tree in the trash. I need the bottom though because my friend Don Donaldson inspired me to make my own dress form! Coming soon to a bedroom near you.

I’m also cleaning out our bedroom closet. Right now I’m on a break from it. I’m trying to pack some stuff because we want to move within the next few months. I also need to go through all of my clothes and get rid of some crap I’ve been holding onto and use other stuff that got buried.

I watched the beginning of season six of Buffy today and now I’m watching the first Rocky while I clean. Oh! The episode of Desperate Housewives I was (supposed to be) on aired tonight. I didn’t see it but I got cut. Ah well, next time!

One last thing, I’m sorry for how mundane these daily posts are but I realized that if I blog what I did each day with my post, I’ll know exactly what I did for every day of the year for at least one year of my life. Watch this be the most boring year of my life haha.

Anyway, here’s Kristyn, Day Seven!!!

Day Ten

I am not really feeling well today. I wrote up a list of to-do’s and then sat at my computer all day watching the Jersey Shore. I did feed the animals, straighten up, shower, cleaned out my makeup bag (loooooong overdue, especially since I accidentally dumped an entire container of powder into it by accident last week) and organized my purse. I also printed out an important document and started filling it out. *sigh* I just didn’t do the things I really wanted to do and so now I feel like a slacker. I always feel like if I had ONE place to organize all of my thoughts, I’d be better off. In case you haven’t noticed, I like to write stuff down and keep track of things. I carry two notebooks with me wherever I go. One is for notes and general info. I use it whenever I need to write down a phone number or write down a confirmation number or just anything really. It’s REALLY insanely helpful. The other one is a book of to do lists. This one is really helpful too. The PROBLEM with this one is that there isn’t a calendar in there to write stuff down for future dates. I really need a planner. I was going a thousand miles a minute before Christmas when all the jobs dried up. No one is in the office in this industry between Christmas and New Year’s. And I know from my experience both in entertainment and publishing that the first week back is basically for catching up. So no interviews and nowhere to go which makes me feel like I’m still on vacation (though I am applying to what jobs are posted). This would be find if I had nothing to do but I HAVE things to do and deadlines for things that I’m not on top of because for all intents and purposes, I have no sense of time since I have nowhere to be ever. It sounds like fun but it’s mostly a guilt spiral because I can never relax because there is always something I SHOULD be doing but just can’t seem to get myself to do. I need some kind of structure. On top of the notes book and the to do list book, I keep a goals book. I don’t write in this every day. I write in it like every other month or so, sometimes more or less frequently. Well actually I read my goals, date the ones I’ve achieved, cancel the ones I don’t care about anymore or add notes about progress where necessary. THEN I write my goals down. It’s just a way of keeping track of what I want in my life, both short and long-term. I just had ANOTHER idea for notebook a little while ago though. I need to start an inspiration journal that’s just filled with creative ideas. I have a LOT of creative projects always going on. Some get abandoned because I come up with something else I want to pursue. It’s hard to keep track. I think this one would be good because it would be just fun. Either write lists of inspirations or sketch ideas. I had been kicking the idea of keeping an art journal around but I know it’s something I won’t keep up with. I think making an inspiration journal kind of rounds that idea out a bit. Anyway, I gotta go do some stuff and I’m babbling anyway.

P.S. It’s a few hours later and Kristyn got home, let me talk her ear off, helped me straighten up some and then fell asleep on the couch. I’m watching the last episode of Buffy where things come to a head with Glory. Without any further ado, here is Kristyn’s sleepyhead.
