We had a great Christmas!

I’m a week late in posting this but who cares? I have been partying and having a good time all week. I gave myself sort of a self-imposed vacation. I ate Christmas cookies, drank Two Buck Chuck, watched Buffy and crafted. It’s been wonderful. I also managed to crank out some work and hustle and bustle a bit but I definitely took a week to turn the hustling down to a dull roar. This week, it’s time to turn it back up again haha.

Anyway, we ALSO had a great New Year’s Eve but I’ll tell you about that later. Last year we had sort of a “meh” Christmas because Kristyn had to work both Christmas Eve AND Christmas. We Skyped with everyone and got lots of good prezzies but we were homesick and apart and it was kind of blah.

This year Kristyn had off for Christmas Eve (but worked on Christmas). This is good because Kristyn’s favorite part of the entire Christmas season is going over to her Aunt Alison and Uncle Rich’s for dinner. (ie. She loves celebrating on Christmas Eve.) My family always celebrated on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day because we’d rotate going to see either side of the family on each day.

ANYWAY. On Christmas Eve Eve, I baked like six or seven dozen Ricotta Cookies, two dozen Gingerbread cookies and made two dozen Potato Scones to have for breakfast (not two dozen for breakfast that’s just how much the recipe made haha). I cleaned the house from top to bottom and even wrapped all of the presents our family sent us! Kristyn came home after work at like 1:30am and was mad at me because she had stopped by Walgreen’s to pick out some stuff to put in my stocking as a surprise but I had her debit card on me haha. So we went to Walgreen’s in Hollywood and shopped for a while. We didn’t get home until probably around 3 or so. We chilled, I showed Kristyn all the stuff I’d made and we went to bed watching Buffy.

In the morning, I cued the Yule Log up on the laptop. Here it is:

And we started opening our presents. We got SO MUCH from everyone and we are SO grateful and were SO surprised! I don’t want to list everything because I don’t want to brag or make anyone feel funny but a sampling of what we got is:

* A box of cookies, candy and fun stuff from Matt and Rachel
* Two vegetarian cookbooks from our Moms
* A gift certificate to Trader Joe’s from Aunt Alison and Uncle Rich and the boys
* A box of goodies from my Mom and Nana. Inside were some holiday decorations, Christmas socks, a springform pan to make Apple Cake and a hand-written cookbook. The cookbook made me bawl my eyes out because it’s all hand-written family recipes from my Mom and Nana and even one photo-copied and stapled in that my Great Grandma wrote herself. I grew up with her and think of her as almost like a second Mom. She passed away when I was about thirteen so to see her handwriting again just…it made me really happy and cry a LOT. Haha.
* A gift certificate that let’s you choose any kind of outing you want in California from Kristyn’s brother Charlie, Linda and the kids.
* A gift certificate to our favorite store Target from Kristyn’s sister Lynn, Tommy and the boys.
* And my sister sent us something but it didn’t come until just this past Tuesday so I’ll put it in the New Year’s Eve post. Trust. It’s awesome.
* Grandma Barr sent us money to buy something for ourselves with. So sweet.
* Kristyn’s parents went crazy and sent us EVERYTHING haha. Comforter, dishes, pots, pans, utensils, slippers.

And that isn’t even everything. We are really SO LUCKY and made out like bandits. It wasn’t even the gifts themselves just the thought. Also we got a ton of Christmas cards which we LOVE. Thank you EVERYONE!!!

Oh and with Christmas money we put some stuff in our stockings and decided to buy The Michael Jackson Experience and Harry Potter LEGO. OMG SUCH GOOD GAMES!!! More on that later.

So on Christmas Eve morning, we opened prezzies and gave the animals treats. We then called our Parents and Grandmas to wish them a Merry Christmas. We didn’t eat breakfast until like 3pm haha. We had fake Taylor Ham and cheese on toast, scrambled tofu and potato scones with coffee. So good.

We then cleaned up the horrific Christmas mess we’d made. We let the cats play in the melee of the boxes and paper mess until they got tired out haha. Then we played the Michael Jackson Experience for a while.

After that we decided to make the Pee Wee Herman Shrinky Dinks that I’d bought for two beans at a thrift store a few weeks ago. We’re going to make them into ornaments for the tree. I’ve only done Shrinky Dinks like once and Kristyn has never done them so this was a lot of fun. It was really satisfying to see them curl up in the oven haha.

After that we were kind of hungry so we started on dinner. I made my Mom’s famous ziti (the recipe for which came in the hand-written cookbook). In the pictures below you’ll see that she wrote “Eat like a pig, sleep like a baby” in the book. This is in regards to this recipe hahaha. We found fake shrimp at Whole Foods recently so Kristyn decided to make her Aunt Alison’s Shrimp Scampi with it. (FYI, we do eat shrimp sometimes, we just wanted to try this fake stuff out. It wasn’t bad.) So for dinner we had Baked Ziti, “Shrimp” Scampi, Fake Italian Sausage, Biscuits and Wine. For dessert we had Christmas Cookies.

After we ate, we were kind of stuffed to the gills so we played Harry Potter LEGO until we couldn’t take it anymore. GODDAMN is that a good game. Highly recommended!

On Christmas morning, we got up and had a good breakfast (Facon, Biscuits and Potato Scones with coffee). Then it was time for Kristyn to leave for work. She had kind of a rough day but we drank wine and played Harry when she got home so that kind of evened things out haha.

I had a great day. I watched National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (my favorite), drank coffee, made a LOT of progress on a dress I’m sewing, fooled around with Kristyn’s Mom’s sewing machine, watched a TON of Buffy and drank some wine.

Overall it was a great Christmas and here is the proof. The pictures start on the one where Kristyn and Monster are kissing in front of the tree. This is at like 3am on Christmas Eve haha:

Christmas, Broken Toes and Music

Yesterday I didn’t have any job interviews but still managed to drive all the hell over LA for various reasons. I drove Kristyn to her internship and came home and wrote a review for a song by La Femme, a new French lo-fi surfer rock band haha. The song is really REALLY good and here is a link to my review: linky.

Also we went to get our Christmas tree. I have been lamenting on whether or not to even get a tree this year. Financial reasons being the main reason BUT we decided to throw down and get one. We went to the above lot in Glendale because it’s pretty but Glendale is a little richy rich so their trees were pretty expensive. So we went to the tree lot that’s in our supermarket parking lot and found a great one. Took two seconds to pick out. The guy said, “What are you looking for?” And we said, “Cheap and shortish.” He said you can have that one right there for $30 even and I’ll throw in the stand for free.” I said, “Boom.” Here is the guy tying it to our car. Thanks guy.

Also, I went into this weird thrift shop down the street. I’ve driven past it a lot of times but it was always closed. It’s got an Indian name and it benefits some charity but I didn’t catch the name of either because I found Pee Wee Herman Shrinky Dinks from 1987!!! What?! 2 beans. I couldn’t pass them up. And I’m glad I went in there because I’ve been looking for a legit thrift shop forever. All the thrift stores in LA are overpriced, trendy or waaaaay picked over (and therefore only filled with the stuff that NO ONE WANTS). All of the trendoid hipsters have already taken anything that’s worth having because you KNOW they show up on the day they load the stock. Bitches. And I’ve been thinking a lot about Shrinky Dinks lately for some reason and have been DYING to make them. I think I only did it once when I was a kid. I think I’m going to make tree ornaments out of these!

Here is a sweet pictures of Chuckles giving Kristyn’s nose a kiss.  He’s had a tough time lately because since we’re alway busy working or looking for work, we haven’t had much time to let him out of his cage to stretch his legs for a hot minute.  Any time he gets out of his cage, he is really happy to be alive.  For like a minute.  And then he runs back into his cage and puts himself to bed again.  It’s like he’s shellshocked.  Poor Chuckles.

After we brought the tree in, we really had to motor because Kristyn had to cover a show for a singer named Jenny O.  She has a song on the new Target Christmas album (that I think is free for download). Anyway she was adorable and really talented. Really pretty voice. Good times. OH. And I want to say, audiences in LA are A-DORABLE. At every show I’ve been to, people leave like a three foot space around the performers no matter how many people are in attendance. It’s so funkin polite. In NY, if there is an inch in front of the performer, you can bet your bippy someone is in that inch of space. And if it’s YOU who is in that inch of space, no shit, someone is going to take their elbow, dig it into your NECK and take that inch of space over. AND say “Fuck you” to you when you complain about it. I wish I were kidding. What’s even more adorable is that this kid accidentally kicked over a beer that had been set on the ground and a guy from ACROSS THE ROOM came over with a handful of paper towels so they could clean it up. Amazing. And another reason why LA doesn’t get enough credit. The people here are SO POLITE it’s ridiculous. I love it.

Here is just a shot of the ceiling at the Bootleg Theater.

When we brought the tree in, we realized that we had NOWHERE to put it haha.  We always ask for a tall, narrow tree because we are apartment dwellers and just don’t have room for a big fat tree.  Unfortunately we had gotten the word “short” stuck in our heads when we were at the lot and when we picked out the tree we didn’t think of the word “narrow”.  When we got home we realized that the tree we’d gotten was HELLA thick.  Oh, and as an aside, I almost broke my damn toe taking the tree off of the top of the car.  I don’t know why by they attach a wooden cross with a plastic cup to the bottom of the tree.  It’s like what you see on TV, trees with the wooden “X” stand on the bottom of it.  Anyway, as usual, I overestimated my strength (I am always doing this) and decided to lift the tree off of the car like I was picking up a cat.  I had my purse on my shoulder and everything.  Like I was lifting a goddamn grocery bag.  IT’S A TREE.  A GODDAMN TREE.  Here I am wearing a cardigan and ballet flats, purse slung over my shoulder, as casual as you please, trying to hoist a tree over my head.  Naturally it crashed down on me, landing on my stupid toe.  I saw stars.  Kristyn starts screaming “ARE YOU ALRIGHT!  ARE YOU OKAY! WHAT WERE YOU THINKING! ARE YOU OKAY!”  (as you do). I’m running for the courtyard because I want to get into the light to look at my foot to make sure it’s still attached and everything.  It was and Kristyn is like belly laughing and screaming caring/rhetorical questions at me.  I shrieked, “I don’t care about your right now!!!”  And she goes (through hysterical laughter) “You’re making me have to pee right now!”  She told me to sit down on the couch and brought in the tree.  She asked me what in the hell I thought I was doing trying to lift a tree OVER my head and frankly I didn’t have a logical answer.  Oh and the toe is NOT broken, it’s A-OK.  I’m just an idiot.

Anyway, when we got back from the show, we were both exhausted.  BUT I forced Kristyn to get up and help me move some stuff around to make room for the tree.  We had to move an entire bookshelf, Chuckles cage and the entertainment center but we did it haha. Kristyn tried every avenue she could to get out of it but I put my (broken) foot down and we got it done.  Then we watched “Modern Family” until we fell asleep on the couch.

We woke up this morning and took a million pictures of the cats, the above is one of them.  I have to write two articles and then go to a show at The Strange.  I’m excited because it’s La Femme, the band whose song I reviewed in the link at the top of this (lengthy) blog post.  There really isn’t any info on this band online so I’m excited to hear what the rest of their music sounds like.

Also, another one of my reviews went up on LA Music Blog yesterday.  I reviewed the recently released 30 Rock Soundtrack.  I am not usually one for TV/Film soundtracks but I really, really like this one.  Read my review.

Okay I have to go write some more stuff. I went to see a band called “He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister” the other night and I think I found a new favorite band. So cute and so fun. Talk to you bitches later. (“Bitches” meant in the nicest way possible, of course.)

We Love Pee Wee Herman!

For my 30th Birthday this year, my sister Christine and her boyfriend Matt bought me and Kristyn tickets to see Pee Wee Herman! This was after I dropped some SERIOUS hints on Facebook to the tune of:

I wouldn’t be mad if someone bought me tickets to see Pee Wee in LA.

Nosiree, I wouldn’t be angry at all.

Man I’d like to see Pee Wee.

You get the point…Anyway, I’d ordinarily just shut up and buy them but I didn’t have any spare coin since it was all tied up in moving here. When in doubt, guilt it out. So THANK YOU GUYS!!!!

So the show was originally supposed to be at the Music Box in Hollywood but there was some confusion and then the show was moved to Club Nokia in Downtown. This moved the show back a bit but worked out better because that mean we got to meet Pee Wee! Well sort of. You’ll see.

Anyway, we chose tickets for this past Friday, January 29th. Here’s a picture of the Nokia Theater. We were at “Club Nokia” which is kind of a smaller venue within the complex.

This week starts the Winter Olympics so there were some Target billboards hanging up and one of them featured Shaun White which I thought was kind of cool.

Shaun White Target Poster.

We’ve never been to this theater before so we really didn’t know how to navigate things. We live very close to Downtown so the ride didn’t take long and we left about an hour early for like a 15 minute drive. Unfortunately, we didn’t figure that the area around Club Nokia was kind of like an amusement park for adults. There are a lot of restaurants and theaters around there. Lucky Strike Bowling is down here too. Oh and so is the Staples Center. So needless to say, there was a lot of traffic and a lot of waiting for parking as well as many circuitous paths to get to where you want to go.

That being said, the show started at 7 and naturally we didn’t get in until 7:15…but it’s okay because out seats were the bomb!

Here’s Miss Yvonne and Pee Wee!

Miss Yvonne and Pee Wee.

Here’s Conky, Randy, Miss Yvonne, Pee Wee, Chairry and everyone else.

Miss Yvonne!

The show was hysterical. It wasn’t overly raunchy or child-friendly. It really walked a line between the both and was appropriate for the kids present and funny for the adults (there weren’t a lot of kids though but still any adult humor was very subtle).

The set.

The plot is basically a couple of things. Pee Wee wants to fly and Miss Yvonne wants to date Cowboy Curtis.

Conky, Chairy, Pee Wee!

The King of Cartoons stops by for a visit.

King of Cartoons and Pee Wee!

Basically Jambi grants Pee Wee a wish and he wants to use it to fly but gives it to Miss Yvonne to get Captain Curtis to like her. They fall in love and Pee Wee has a temper tantrum over losing his wish. Miss Yvonne confesses what she did to Cowboy Curtis and he tells her she’s stupid bc he liked her anyway. Jambi re-grants his wish to Pee Wee who ends up flying and it looks so funny the way they do it.

Afterward, we were told to stay seated on the floor because anyone who had bought tickets for the Music Box got a wrist band to meet Pee Wee afterward as thanks for being patient with the date change.

So we sat there and tried not to lose our shit because some “oh so clever” hipsters were sitting behind us pontificating on the merits of Bjork while kicking the back of our chairs over and over again.

Oh afterward too, Kristyn pointed out Brian Posehn! We were hoping to see Diablo Cody but I think she went to the second show. Kristyn swears she was sitting right in front of us though and I have to confess that I kept thinking that same girl was her. IDK.

What the border of the stage looked like.

Pee Wee came out and it turned out not to be like a “meet Pee Wee” type situation so much as a Q&A. We’d been hoping to get a picture with him but this was kind of cooler because we got to hear him talk and it was such a small crowd…

Pee Wee interviewing a kid.

He interviewed all the kids in the crowd. It was kind of funny because the kids really didn’t know how to answer him.

Pee Wee interviewing a kid.

He came into our row!!! He walked right past us to interview a kid and was so close! LOVELOVELOVEYOUPEEWEE!

Pee Wee's arsehole.

He was so close I wanted to wrap my arms around his waist and rest my cheek on the small of his back!

Pee Wee talking to a kid near us.

Could NOT resist taking a picture of his shoes. Kristyn got a better picture though which she’ll prob post on her blog soon.

PEE WEE!!!!!

Ugh and right before things started this OBNOXIOUS couple sat next to us. Drunk as skunks and smelling like beer. Apparently they’re up for a Grammy for some reason but IDK what the name
of their band is. Cotton or something?

Pee Wee talking to the obnoxious couple.

The couple are from Baltimore and Pee Wee mentioned some biker bar there that John Waters took him too. For some reason, no one in the bar would believe John Waters that he was famous but Pee Wee came in and they all recognized him and went bananas. Oh how I wish me and Kristyn could go to a biker bar with Pee Wee and John Waters!!!

Stage and Pee Wee.

The Q&A was less a Q&A and more Pee Wee just talking to us. He was kind of half in character, half not. His voice is much lighter than I’d expect it to be and I just really wanted to hug him the entire time.

Pee Wee told us that he has two scripts written but hasn’t gotten a deal to make them into movies yet. OMG I hope he does! Also, he’s thinking of bringing his show on Broadway but doesn’t know if he wantsta do it bc you have to do a lot of shows. So IDK.

In closing.

This is the courtyard outside the Nokia Theater. Eddie Izzard was performing there too!!! We died!!

Pretty lights.

And here is the Staples Center. This is the infamous site of MJ’s “This is It” and of his memorial.

Home of MJ's Memorial/This is It.

After the show, we drove around Downtown a little because we really never go there (and it’s like ten minutes from our house duh). It’s very pretty there and very NYC-esque but not filthy haha.

We found directions to the Stillwell Hotel, otherwise known as “the Illwell”. This is the roach motel that we stayed at when we visited LA in October of 08. Aleix nailed it when he called it “The Bollywood version of The Shining”. It was so scary, old and oddly Indian-themed.

The Illwell: Bollywood version of the Shining.

When we were at the Illwell, our bathroom had a view of this building that says “Jesus Saves” on it. I kept trying to get a good picture of it out our window and I couldn’t so I got one with my iPhone.

View from the Illwell.

We went to the supermarket afterward to pick up a couple of things. While Kristyn was looking for something, I found this fan magazine based on the life of one Mrs. Sarah Palin. It made me laugh so much becase there were even like posters in there of her and her family. Haha.

Bop for Republicans.

And this is just a picture of Edith and Elvira from the morning after Pee Wee. They were sitting nicely but just after I took the picture, Edith realized how close Elvira was and a fight broke out, haha…

Edith and Elvira a second prior to fighting this morning.
